CHRIS OWENS
Chris Owens has been Bishop Dunne’s Head Boys’ Basketball Coach since 2019.
A native of Akron, Ohio, he graduated from Duncanville (Tx.) High School, where he played basketball for four years and was named an All-American and Mr. Basketball in Texas his senior year.
Mr. Owens went on to play three seasons at the University of Texas from 1999-02, helping the Longhorns reach three NCAA Tournaments. He was named the team’s Most Improved Player after the 1999-2000 season. Then in the 2000-01 season he helped lead the Longhorns to a 25-9 record by scoring 14.4 points per game, good for third on the team. He led the Longhorns that year in blocks with 92 and rebounds per game (7.9). He set (and still holds) the Texas record for field goal percentage in an NCAA Tournament game by hitting all seven of his shots vs. Indiana State in March 2000.
He played one season for the NBA Memphis Grizzlies, who obtained him on the night of the 2002 NBA Draft from the Milwaukee Bucks, who had selected him in the second round. He went on to play professional basketball for several years in Asia, Europe, and South America.

Cheerleading
SUSAN HYMES
Susan Hymes came to Bishop Dunne as the Volunteer Cheerleading Coach in 2007 and was named the head coach the following year.
She grew up in Charleston, S.C., and graduated with honors from Middleton High School there. She graduated in the top 10 percent of her class and cheered there all four years, captaining both the junior varsity and varsity teams along the way. Her teams won numerous Tri-County cheer championships. She was also named president of the Y-Teens, a YMCA-sponsored club.
Susan received an academic and extra-curricular scholarship to attend the College of Charleston (S.C.), and that’s where the story gets interesting. Charleston, S.C. is also the site of The Citadel, a military college that was all-male until the 1990’s. With no females on campus, The Citadel recruited cheerleaders from around the city; so Susan cheered on The Citadel’s co-ed squad for three years after being one of eight women chosen (out of 300). She was named the squad’s captain her third year.
Susan’s oldest son, Billy, came to Dunne in 2007 entering seventh grade. “I was at school all the time because he played football, wrestled, & baseball,” she says. “Cheer is a passion of mine, so I had to join the Bishop Dunne team.”
Billy graduated from Dunne 2013 and went on to The Citadel, receiving a degree in Civil Engineering. Susan’s youngest son, Sammy, is a senior at Dunne; he hopes to attend the U.S. Naval Academy or The Citadel, following in his brother and father’s footsteps.
Susan’s husband of 34 years, Bill, is a Dallas native. They met in college, but that doesn’t begin to tell the story. Bill wrestled at Jesuit High School in Dallas and at The Citadel until an injury prematurely ended his career. “Walking across campus at the end of his junior year, he heard a lot of girls and followed the sound to the first day of cheer tryouts,” Susan recalled. “He asked how he could participate (I’m sure to get closer to the girls). The coach said he would have to be a cheerleader. He tried out and made it. He just didn’t realize he was going to meet his future wife!”
Susan and Bill are rescue scuba divers, and they love to go scuba diving with their sons. Another interesting fact: “I currently have my Commercial Driver’s License, so I can bus the cheerleaders wherever we need to go!”
Before she became a coach, Susan spent many years as a commercial property manager and a project manager for a computer software company.
